So I saw Eclipse. I watched one of the cam versions floating around out there - I'm both glad I didn't have to shell out for it and still intrigued enough that I might still want to see it in theatre in a few weeks, after the hoopla's all but completely died down.
And that should give you a pretty big hint about how I felt about the movie.
I hated the book. Like fiery-hated it. Mainly because all three of the main characters (already walking a fine line) are such dicks. So of course I carried some of that disdain into the movie - which to its credit definitely makes me not hate them
as much.
Anyway, upshot? Eclipse is a choppy, uneven, tedious at times, yet still bafflingly entertaining mess overall. I mean, say what you will about the first two films, but they were fairly go-with-the-flow-y in a way that Eclipse just... isn't. It's like the director shot a couple dozen short films about the same group of folks and then haphazardly strung it all together. Not that there's a lot of depth to be had, but jfc, if I hadn't read the book, I might not have known the purpose of any of the shit that was going on.
And after everything I'd heard from people who saw the movie before me, I'm sort of disappointed that I clearly didn't think the film was as good as most of them did. No doubt I was expecting too much after all of those glowing assessments. I'd been given the impression that the acting was uniformly better, for one, which it wasn't (Kristen was no better but thankfully no worse, same with Taylor, and Rob was still terrible - though he looked like he was enjoying himself a bit more, at least). With the exception of Charlie and the Cullens, the rest of the characters may as well have not existed; and I'm including Riley and Victoria in the nix-their-existence category, because they seemed more like footnotes than anything. There was no real sense of danger - what 'conflict' there was was pretty much entirely between Bella, Edward, and Jacob. It was definitely nice to see an ease to the Edward/Bella chemistry this time that we really hadn't seen even hints of since maybe the bedroom kiss and prom scenes in Twilight. They were more affectionate and couple-y, and I'm not just talking about the kissing and fooling around stuff. So that was nice. The cinematography was as nicely done as the previews had lead me to believe, but the editing. Oh man, what a fucking hack job. And the direction was all over the place, very uneven. Don't even get me started on the sheer lunacy of the script.
So... yeah.

I've tired myself out now. Heh. I'm going to take a nap before work. Ugggggghhh.
